SUMMER ACTIVITIES

Durango Mountain Resort - Durango Mountain Resort is the place to be for total summer adventure. Daily activities including the Alpine Slide, Miniature golf, scenic chairlift rides, mountian biking with access to more than 50 miles of world class trails and Kids Summer Adventure Camp. Over the Hill Outfitters, Inc. - 8 miles east of Durango on the Florida River at 4140 County Road 234, (970)385-7656 or (970)247-1694. We specialize in custom horseback adventures and guided flyfishing. Join us for the finest two-hour horseback ride in the area on the secluded Gambel Oak and Ponderosa Pine forest of the Palmer Quarter Horse Ranch (10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.; reservations required). If you have more time, try our all-day horseback ride in the San Juan National Forest and Weminuche Wilderness (9:00 a.m.; reservations required). If you are adventurous, experience our basecamp in the Florida drainage of the Weminuche Wilderness where you can climb spectacular peaks, fish remote mountain streams, hunt big game, and photograph the finest scenery in the world. Rapp's Corrals - 451 County Road 510, (970)247-8454. Horseback riding corrals are located 17 miles north of Durango just off of Hwy 550 near Haviland Lake. We specialize in small group custom riding and wagon rides. We hope you can join us! Open 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., seven days a week (conditions permitting).


Thomas the Tank Engine visits Durango

Durango &Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad offers two special activities for children this summer. The first is A Day Out With Thomas. The classis storybook character Thomas the Tank Engine will chug into D&SNG Railroad station June 18, 19 & 20. Aspiring engineers and their grownups will enjoy a 30-minute ride with Thomas. Other activities include storytelling and videos, live music, an Imagination Station with arts & crafts, and tempo-rary tattoos of Island of Sodor friends. Tickets are $14 person, and children under 1 are free. 247-2733. The second event is the Mountain Express, a Cascade Family Adventure Train will run June 21-August 5. Families can learn about native flora, Colorado wildlife, nature studies and fire econogy on this half-day wilderness adventure train. Smokey Bear will be on hand at the Cascade Station to educate and meet guests. Explore the "Discovery Trail" at the Cascade Canyon. Goodie bags will be provided for all youth on board. Tickets are $60 for adults and $30 for children (5-11). 247-2733


Good clean fun at the splash pad

Durango Community Recreation Center Swimming Pool - 2400 Main Ave., (970) 375-7300. Indoor pool complex. Lap pool is 25 meters by 25 yards, has 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards. Leisure pool goes from 0" to 3'6" and includes play features, two small water slides, lazy river, a vortex, two leisure lap lanes and 25' water slide. Hot tub for relaxing. Day pass for rec center including pool is Adult $3.50, Youth (4-17yrs) $2.50, Senior (55+) $2.50, Child 3 and under free with adult. Open Monday - Friday 5:30 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. Sunday 8:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
