Snowdown
Durango's Wacky Winter Festival
January 26-30

"Holy winter celebrations, Batman! This town's insane!"

"Yes, Robin, but we're both wearing tights, capes and masks!"

It's a scene that could be played out hundreds of times in Durango at the end of January, when "Super-hero Snowdown" comes at you faster than a speeding bullet and able to leap tall buildings with a single bound.

Durango's renowned winter celebration, Snowdown, turns 27, but there's no sign that Snowdown is growing up. Far from it. For more than a quarter of a century, locals and visitors alike have delighted in fun, frivolity, parades and parodies. And this year's theme takes a page from the comic books.

More than 70 different events take place from sun-up to the wee hours over five crazy days, including the waiter/waitress races, the hotel bed races, the dog and cat fashion show and the region's largest parade: a nighttime Light Parade Jan. 28 in downtown Durango.

For a schedule of events, visit www.snowdown.org or pick up an event guide from businesses downtown.

Locals indulge their inner divas at the bawdy Snowdown Follies show.
