Durango Cowboy Gathering

October 6-9
Wrastle up some fun at the historic Strater Hotel in downtown Durango for the 17th Durango Cowboy Gathering, a celebration of the rich culture and heritage of the American cowboy. This event features cowboy poetry and music, a cowboy cabin exhibit at the Animas Museum, a Motorless Parade in downtown Durango, a gallery reception of Western art, and a Cowboy Action Shoot
presented by the Four Corners Gunslingers.

Arts festivals & exhibits

June 3-28 – Durango Arts Center's 29th Annual Juried Exhibit in the Barbara Conrad Gallery at the DAC Gallery. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. For information, call (970) 259-2606. The opening reception on Friday, June 3, features a juror slide
show at 7 p.m.

July 8-10 – Art on the Animas at Santa Rita Park. Crafts, art, food and fun.

Aug. 13-14 – 12th Annual Main Avenue Arts Festival Durango's historic downtown Main Avenue pro-vides the setting for this outdoor festival against the backdrop of the La Plata Mountains. The wide avenue, lined with restaurants, galleries, and a variety of shops, is a gathering place for shoppers and the thousands of visitors that fill the town each summer.

Vibrant summer music

Dancers entertain at Rotary Park during the Family Festivo, a free Music in the Mountains concert. The event, held July 26, features the Festival Orchestra, Durango Children's Theatre and Ballet Folklorico de Durango.

May 27-28– Retrospective is at 7 p.m. in Roshong Recital Hall at Fort Lewis College. Cyprian Consiglio and John Pennington perform a new collaboration with the Animas Chamber Players.

May 30 – Jazzy Brass
Memorial Day Celebration is a free concert at 1 p.m. in Rotary Park. The Animas Brass Quintet returns with Timothy Farrell, joined by Jeff Solon, for an afternoon of American classics celebrating the Memorial Day holiday.

June 4 – Words and Music with Rosalind Simpson, harpist, and Douglas Dunston, conductor, perform narrative and theatrical music for harp and strings at 7 p.m. in Roshong Recital Hall at Fort Lewis College.

June 23-Aug. 4 – Bluegrass Series is free on Thursdays at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.

Beginning in 1987 with 11 musicians, Music in the Mountains has grown to a three-week festival featuring musicians from around the world and offering orchestral, chamber, conservatory and Pops concerts. Free performances for children and their families are featured during the festival. The 19th season is presented from July 17 to Aug. 7. More than 30 concerts will feature 250 performers at a variety of venues in Southwest Colorado, including Durango Mountain Resort, Rotary Park in Durango, the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College and Boot-Jack Ranch in Pagosa Springs.
