Leash Laws for your Dogs and when walking around Durango Except in areas officially designated for off leash activities, it shall be unlawful for any owner, possessor or authorized agent of any owner to fail to restrain a dog by physical means from running at large, as defined in this section, within the city limits. A dog shall be deemed to be running at large, and permitted by the owner, possessor or agent to run at large under any of the following circumstances: (1) When the dog is off or away from the premises of the owner or keeper thereof and not under the direct control of such owner, keeper, or a member of his immediate family, either by leash, cord or chain, not more than eight (8) feet long; (2) If the dog is left unattended on any public property, whether or not the dog is secured by any leash, cord, chain or other means; or (3) If the dog is left unattended in any vehicle parked on public property, unless the dog is secured within such vehicle by means of the natural enclosure of the vehicle or by means of a leash, cord or chain not more than six (6) feet long.
