Annual prevention tasks
Vegetation and
Fuels
- Prune any new
growth within the defensible space. Dispose of slash.
- Mow grass and
weeds to a low height.
- Stack firewood
uphill or away from the home.
- Clear
vegetation around fire hydrants, cisterns, and propane tanks.
- Remove trash
and debris from the defensible space.
- Evaluate power
lines for safety. Contact the utility company for vegetation
removal.
Fire Preparation
- Make sure
there is enough garden hose to reach all parts of the house.
- Store a
ladder, rakes, axes, and shovels in an accessible place.
- Evaluate the
driveway for fire and emergency vehicle access.
- Check posted
road signs and name and house
numbers for visibility.
- Practice
fire drills. Determine escape routes and meeting points.
- Post a “Wildfire
Evacuation Plan” in
the house.
- Create a
disaster supply kit.
Building
Maintenance
- Clean out
gutters and sweep roof.
- Remove any
branches overhanging the roof and chimney.
- Remove trees
growing through the porch or deck.
- Clean
chimneys and stove pipes; check spark-arrestor screens.
- Check fire
extinguishers.
- Install and
test smoke detectors.
- Screen any
foundation or attic vents.
- Enclose
foundations and decks.
